Classic Hobo Dinner
Ingredients
-
500 g ground beef
-
3 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
-
2 carrots, thinly sliced
-
1 medium onion, sliced
-
1 bell pepper, sliced
-
2 tbsp butter
-
1 tsp garlic powder
-
1 tsp paprika
-
½ tsp dried thyme
-
Salt and black pepper, to taste
-
½ cup shredded cheddar cheese, optional
Method
-
Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
-
Tear off 4 large sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil.
-
Divide the sliced potatoes, carrots, onion, and bell pepper between the foil sheets.
-
Season the vegetables with garlic powder, paprika, thyme, salt, and pepper.
-
Divide the ground beef into 4 portions and shape each into a loose patty. Place one on top of each pile of vegetables.
-
Add ½ tbsp butter on top of each beef patty.
-
Fold the foil tightly around the food, creating sealed packets.
-
Place the packets on a baking tray and bake for 40–50 minutes, until the potatoes and carrots are tender and the beef is cooked through.
-
Carefully open the packets—hot steam will escape. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese, if using, and return to the oven uncovered for 2–3 minutes to melt.
-
Serve straight from the foil or transfer to plates.
Easy variation
For extra flavor, add a spoonful of Worcestershire sauce or a little barbecue sauce to each packet before sealing.
