Cleaning the baked-on grease and streaks trapped in between the glass panes of an oven door is notoriously frustrating. While many methods require completely unbolting or disassembling the entire door, a popular viral “mom hack” makes it much easier without taking the whole structure apart.
The “Oh-So-Simple” Cardboard & Cloth Trick
Instead of risking broken glass or losing screws during a full disassembly, this clever trick lets you reach the narrow gap effortlessly:
-
Find the Access Point: Look at the top edge of your oven door (often right under the handle). Many oven models have small ventilation slots or a top trim piece that can be unscrewed or left open.
-
Prep Your Tool: Take a sturdy piece of thin cardboard (like a flattened-out cereal box cut into a long strip) or a clean, flexible paint stirrer.
-
Wrap It: Wrap a thin microfiber cleaning cloth or a damp rag tightly around the end of the cardboard strip. Secure it with a rubber band or a bit of tape so it won’t slip off inside the door.
-
Spray and Slide: Spray a bit of glass cleaner or a mixture of water and vinegar onto the cloth (never spray directly into the oven door vent to avoid soaking electrical components or streaks). Slide your makeshift tool down into the gap between the glass panes.
-
Wipe Away Grime: Move it back and forth to scrub away the baked-on grease, then swap out the cloth for a dry one to buff it clear.
Note: If your specific oven model has a totally sealed glass unit where the top vent is blocked, you may still need to pop off the front door panel using a screwdriver. If you have to do that, always lay the door flat on a table first so the glass panes don’t slip and shatter!
