Cleaning the grease and streaks trapped in between the glass panes of an oven door is a notoriously frustrating chore, usually requiring you to completely unbolt the entire appliance door. However, a popular “mom hack” makes it much simpler without all the heavy disassembly.
The “Oh-So-Simple” Cardboard & Cloth Trick
Instead of risking broken glass or losing screws during a full teardown, try this quick method to reach that narrow gap:
-
Find the Access Point: Look at the top edge of your oven door (often right under the handle). Many models feature small ventilation slots or a top trim piece that provides a narrow opening.
-
Prep Your Tool: Take a sturdy piece of thin cardboard (such as a flattened cereal box cut into a long strip) or a clean, flexible paint stirrer.
-
Wrap It: Wrap a thin microfiber cleaning cloth or a damp rag tightly around the end of the cardboard strip. Secure it with a rubber band or a piece of tape so it won’t slip off inside the door.
-
Spray and Slide: Mist a bit of glass cleaner or a water-and-vinegar mixture onto the cloth (never spray liquid directly into the oven door vent to avoid soaking electrical components). Gently slide your tool down into the gap between the glass panes.
-
Wipe Away Grime: Move it back and forth to scrub away the baked-on grease, then swap the cloth for a dry one to buff the glass clear.
Note: If your specific oven model has a totally sealed glass unit where the top vent is blocked, you may still need to carefully pop off the front door panel using a screwdriver. If you do, always lay the door flat on a table first so the glass panes don’t shift and shatter!
